instant Love: Hamster's Christmas goes beyond a simple love story, using metaphor to explore the complex emotions faced by a woman in her late twenties at a turning point in life. At its core is the shifting range of feelings—anxiety, anticipation, isolation, and desire—arising amid intertwined social, environmental, and personal changes. Guided by a kind of magical imagination, the work engages in quiet exchanges with the unseen world, tracing impressions of emotion, signs, foresight, and the wish to alter destiny. The result is a narrative that moves fluidly across the boundary between reality and imagination.

The images in instant Love: Hamster's Christmas function like folding screens or talismans. In traditional rituals, folding screens served as symbolic devices—dividing the secular from the sacred and acting as a passage to unseen realms. This work inherits that symbolic role, creating a dual structure: a front that reflects the artist’s daily life and reality, and a reverse side that carries wishes and invocations.

Cultural elements such as saju (Korean Four Pillars of Destiny), zodiac signs, and love compatibility readings—often dismissed as unscientific—are in fact rooted in accumulated experience and case-based interpretation, forming a kind of statistical system. They classify personality types and interpret tendencies or destinies based on birth date and time, a logic that echoes data-driven thinking. Generative image tools, which draw on vast datasets to create new visuals, share a similar structure, and this project intentionally draws parallels between the two.

In the artist’s saju, water energy dominates; to restore balance, the images incorporate the complementary elements of fire, wood, earth, and metal. Alongside saju, the work draws from Western astrology, the twelve zodiac animals, body constitution types, and imagined love narratives to assemble an “optimal compatibility” image—one believed to generate the most favorable energy for the artist. These compositions combine self-taken photographs with Adobe’s generative image tools, layering, drawing over, and recombining hundreds of elements to shape each image as a personal emblem.

At once a talisman inviting good fortune and a visual experiment in formal beauty, the work holds the desire to ward off harmful relationships and reshape one’s fate. Yet it also contains a wry acknowledgment of the naive hope that a single talisman could change a life, positioning itself as an attempt to reinterpret destiny through a personal visual language.

≪instant Love: 햄스터의 크리스마스≫는 단순한 사랑 이야기를 넘어, 20대 후반 여성이 삶의 전환기에서 마주하는 복합적인 감정을 은유적으로 풀어낸다. 작업의 중심에는 사회적·환경적·개인적 변화가 뒤섞인 시기에 느끼는 불안과 기대, 고립과 욕망의 감정 진폭이 자리한다. 주술적 상상력을 바탕으로 보이지 않는 세계와 은밀히 교감하며, 감정의 잔상과 예감, 선견지명, 그리고 운명을 바꾸고자 하는 마음이 이미지로 스며든다. 이는 현실과 상상의 경계를 부드럽게 오가며 전개되는 이야기로 이어진다.

작품 속 이미지는 병풍이나 부적처럼 작동한다. 전통적으로 병풍은 관혼상제와 같은 의례에서 세속과 성스러운 공간을 구분하고, 보이지 않는 세계로 향하는 통로의 역할을 해왔다. 이와 같은 상징적 기능을 확장해, 이번 작업에서는 작가의 현실과 모습을 담은 ‘앞면’과 믿음과 기원을 품은 ‘이면’이 맞물리는 이중 구조를 형성했다.

작품에 등장하는 사주, 별자리, 궁합 등은 흔히 비과학적으로 여겨지지만, 오랜 경험과 사례를 바탕으로 한 일종의 통계적 해석 방식으로 볼 수 있다. 생년월일과 시간을 기준으로 인간의 성향과 운명을 분석하는 이러한 구조는 데이터 기반의 사고와도 닮아 있다. 생성형 이미지 역시 방대한 데이터를 학습해 결과물을 만들어내기에, 두 체계가 공유하는 구조적 유사성이 자연스럽게 연결된다.

서혜인의 사주는 물의 기운이 강해, 이를 보완하기 위해 오행 중 화(火), 목(木), 토(土), 금(金)의 기운이 이미지 구성에 활용되었다. 여기에 사주뿐 아니라 서양 점성술의 별자리, 12간지, 체질, 사랑에 관한 상상 등이 결합되어, 작가 자신에게 가장 좋은 기운이 흐를 수 있는 ‘최적의 조합’ 이미지를 구상했다. 이는 직접 촬영한 사진과 Adobe의 생성형 이미지 도구를 바탕으로 제작되었으며, 수백 개의 레이어를 겹치고 그 위에 드로잉과 사진을 덧붙여 ‘나만의 상이자 부적’으로 재구성되었다.

이 작업은 좋은 기운을 불러들이려는 부적이자, 조형적 아름다움을 탐구하는 시각적 실험이다. 그 안에는 불순한 관계를 차단하고 스스로의 운을 바꾸고자 했던 마음이 담겨 있으나, 동시에 하나의 부적으로 인생이 달라질 것이라는 순진하고도 허무한 믿음을 바라보는 자조적인 시선도 스며 있다. 주어진 운명을 그대로 수용하기보다, 그것을 새롭게 해석하고 구성하려는 시도로 남는다.
