instant Love: 햄스터의 크리스마스

≪instant Love: Hamster’s Christmas≫ goes beyond a simple love story, metaphorically unfolding the complex emotions faced by a woman in her late twenties at a turning point in life. At the core of the work are feelings of anxiety and anticipation, isolation and desire, experienced amid overlapping social, environmental, and personal changes. Drawing on a shamanistic imagination, the project expresses a will to confront the unseen world and actively reshape one’s own fate, moving fluidly between reality and fantasy.

Traditionally, folding screens have served to separate the secular from the sacred, functioning as passages toward invisible realms. Amulets, likewise, have operated as mediating objects believed to ward off misfortune or prevent harm. The images in this work function in a similar way to folding screens or amulets, extending these symbolic properties to embody a transcendent belief and wish that enables the artist to endure and confront reality. The work can thus be understood as a visual attempt to give form to desires and hopes for good fortune within an uncertain world.

Elements such as saju (Four Pillars), zodiac signs, and compatibility—often regarded as unscientific—can also be understood as forms of statistical interpretation grounded in long-accumulated experiences and cases. By analyzing human tendencies and destinies based on one’s date and time of birth, these systems resemble big data–driven modes of thinking in that they derive information tailored to the individual through vast accumulations of data. Based on this principle, the work incorporates photographs taken by the artist alongside stock images that deliberately embody the nature of big data, as well as Adobe’s generative AI image tools. As generative images likewise produce outcomes through the learning of massive datasets, a structural affinity shared with traditional divinatory systems naturally emerges. Through the layering of hundreds of image layers, combined with drawing and photography, the final image is reconstructed as a personalized visual form.

The artist’s saju is characterized by a strong element of water; to counterbalance this, the energies of fire, wood, earth, and metal from the Five Elements were incorporated into the image composition. In addition to saju, elements from Western astrology, the twelve animal zodiac signs, body constitutions, and imaginative reflections on love are combined to conceive an image of an “optimal configuration” through which the most favorable energy might flow toward the artist.

This project functions both as an amulet intended to attract beneficial energy and as a visual experiment that explores formal beauty. While it contains a desire to block harmful relationships and alter one’s own fate, it simultaneously holds a self-ironic gaze toward the naïve and hollow belief that a single amulet could transform an entire life. Rather than passively accepting a given destiny, the work remains as an attempt to reinterpret and reshape it.

≪instant Love: 햄스터의 크리스마스≫는 단순한 사랑 이야기를 넘어, 20대 후반 여성이 삶의 전환기에서 마주하는 복합적인 감정을 은유적으로 풀어낸다. 작업의 중심에는 사회적·환경적·개인적 변화가 뒤섞인 시기에 느끼는 불안과 기대, 고립과 욕망의 감정이 담겨 있다. 주술적 상상력을 바탕으로 보이지 않는 세계에 맞서 스스로 운명을 바꾸고자 하는 의지를 담은 작업으로, 현실과 상상의 경계를 오가며 풀어낸다.

전통적으로 병풍은 세속과 성스러운 공간을 구분하며, 보이지 않는 세계로 향하는 통로의 역할을 해왔다. 부적은 악운을 차단하거나 위험을 예방하기 위해 특정한 힘이 깃든 매개로 기능해왔다.  작품 속 이미지는 병풍이나 부적처럼 기능하며, 이러한 상징적 속성을 확장해 작가의 현실을 이겨낼 수 있는 초월적인 믿음과 기원을 담는다. 불확실한 현실 속에서 행운을 바라는 마음과 바램의 형식을 시각적으로 드러내는 시도라 할 수 있다.

작품에 등장하는 사주, 별자리, 궁합 등은 흔히 비과학적인 것으로 인식되지만, 오랜 시간 축적된 경험과 사례를 바탕으로 한 일종의 통계적 해석 방식으로 볼 수 있다. 생년월일과 시간을 기준으로 인간의 성향과 운명을 분석하는 이러한 구조는, 방대한 데이터를 거쳐 개인에게만 적용되는 정보를 도출한다는 점에서 빅데이터 기반의 사고와 닮아 있다. 이와 같은 원리를 바탕으로 작품은 직접 촬영한 사진과 더불어, 의도적으로 빅데이터의 성격을 지닌 스톡 포토와 Adobe의 생성형 이미지 도구 AI를 활용했다. 방대한 데이터를 학습해 결과를 도출한다는 점에서, 전통적 점술 체계와 공유하는 구조적 유사성을 띄며, 수백 개의 레이어를 중첩하고 그 위에 드로잉과 사진을 덧붙이는 과정을 통해 이미지는 하나의 개인화된 이미지로 재구성된다.

작업자의 사주는 물의 기운이 강해, 이를 보완하기 위해 오행 중 화(火), 목(木), 토(土), 금(金)의 기운이 이미지 구성에 활용되었다. 여기에 사주뿐 아니라 서양 점성술의 별자리, 12간지, 체질, 사랑에 관한 상상 등이 결합되어, 작가 자신에게 가장 좋은 기운이 흐를 수 있는 ‘최적의 조합’ 이미지를 구상했다. 

이 작업은 좋은 기운을 불러들이려는 부적이자, 조형적 아름다움을 탐구하는 시각적 실험이다. 그 안에는 불순한 관계를 차단하고 스스로의 운을 바꾸고자 했던 마음이 담겨 있으나, 동시에 하나의 부적으로 인생이 달라질 것이라는 순진하고도 허무한 믿음을 바라보는 자조적인 시선도 스며 있다. 주어진 운명을 그대로 수용하기보다, 그것을 새롭게 해석하고 변화하려는 시도로 남는다.
